Three different colours are printed on one webbing sling — and they mean three different things

The short answer

The colour of the webbing certifies one thing and one thing only: a Working Load Limit band, in straight lift, under EN 1492-1.

It does not certify the material, the safety factor, the length, the manufacturer, the batch, or the condition of the sling. Those live in the label and the test record. Colour is a marking requirement — a fast visual pre-check so a slinger can see, at a glance across a dark yard, that the sling in hand is roughly the right size for the job. It is not a quality grade and it is not a certificate.

That distinction matters commercially, because a great deal of cross-border webbing is bought and sold on colour alone.

What the colour does certify

Under EN 1492-1, flat woven webbing slings made from man-made fibre are assigned a colour for each WLL band. The sling is also marked with one black transverse stripe for every tonne of WLL. Together they produce the familiar table:

Two things about that table are worth stating plainly:

  • Colour stops being standardised above 10 t. The standard assigns colours up to 10 t; beyond that it is left to the manufacturer, which is why 12 t slings are very often orange as well. In heavy-tonnage work the colour is a hint, not an identifier.

  • The stripe count is the cross-check. Where colour can fade or be misjudged under poor lighting, counting stripes is more reliable — which is precisely why the standard pairs the two.

Three colours, three completely different jobs

This is the part that gets mixed up most often. A single conforming sling carries three separate colour signals, and confusing them is how people end up with the wrong sling:

Note the trap in rows one and three: green webbing means two tonnes, but a green label means nylon. Same word, two unrelated meanings, on the same object.

The label-colour convention for material is:

  • Blue label — polyester (PES)

  • Green label — polyamide (PA)

  • Brown label — polypropylene (PP)

And the label text is where the actual evidence lives. Under EN 1492-1 the marking must include at least the WLL for a straight lift and the material of the webbing, and in practice a compliant label carries the manufacturer, the standard reference, the length, the sling type and a traceability code. The colour is a convenience layered on top of that. Remove the label and the colour certifies nothing, because there is nothing left to trace it to.

What the colour does not certify

  1. The material. Green webbing tells you 2 t. It tells you nothing about whether the fibre is polyester or nylon — which is exactly what decides chemical resistance. Polyester resists most mineral acids but is attacked by alkalis; polyamide is the reverse. Buying by webbing colour alone, you can receive a perfectly correct 2 t sling that will fail in your process chemistry. The label colour is the only colour that speaks to material.

  2. The safety factor. The colour says nothing about it. Under EN 1492-1 the safety factor for these slings is 7:1 — meaning the minimum breaking load is at least seven times the marked WLL. Under ASME B30.9 it is commonly 5:1; under AS 1353 it is commonly 8:1. A green 2 t sling built to EN 1492-1 and a green 2 t sling built to ASME B30.9 are not the same object, even though they look identical on a shelf.

  3. The capacity in any other hitch. The colour states a straight-lift figure. A red 5 t sling gives 5 t vertical, 4.0 t choked and 10.0 t in a parallel basket. The colour reports the vertical number only; the per-hitch figures are on the label.

  4. The length. Held to a tolerance, but not communicated by colour. Two green slings can be a metre apart.

  5. The condition. A faded, dyed or contaminated sling still shows something that looks like a colour. Colour tells you what the sling was, not what it is.

Where the colour code breaks down in the field

Fading and contamination. UV exposure, oil, cement dust and repeated washing all shift the shade. Violet and blue become hard to separate under sodium lighting; grey and faded black converge; brown and a faded red can look alike under warm light.

Above 10 t. Not standardised. Two suppliers, two colours, one capacity — and no rule broken either time.

Colour matched, stripes not. A sling can be dyed to the right shade while carrying the wrong stripe count, which is why the two are meant to be read together.

“Repainted” webbing. Webbing replaced or re-dyed without the label being reissued leaves a sling whose colour implies a capacity that was never certified for that assembly.

Label missing or illegible. At this point the sling is out of service regardless of what colour it is. This is not a judgement call — it is the removal criterion.

The cross-border trap worth knowing about

If your supplier quotes capacity against ASME B30.9 (5:1) or AS 1353 (8:1), the EN 1492-1 colour code does not apply to what they are shipping. You can receive webbing whose colour implies an EN capacity it was never rated for under EN rules — and no one has done anything wrong, because the colour was never part of their standard.

So the purchase order has to be explicit. Specify the standard, the safety factor and the WLL separately:

Colour on its own is not a specification.

And one question worth asking about 6:1

Some suppliers offer webbing at a 6:1 safety factor while describing the product as EN 1492-1. Since the standard calls for 7:1 for these slings, that combination deserves a question: which document is the claim based on? If the answer is vague, you have learned something useful before the container ships rather than after.

A 60-second compliance check, on the sling in your hand

  1. Colour — does it match the WLL band you expected?

  2. Stripes — count them. One per tonne. Does the count agree with the colour?

  3. Label present and legible — no label, out of service.

  4. Label reads — WLL for straight lift, material of the webbing, standard reference, manufacturer, length, traceability code.

  5. Label colour vs material — blue for polyester, green for nylon, brown for polypropylene. Does it match what you ordered?

  6. Before use — cuts, abrasion, chemical or heat damage, loose stitching, illegible marking.

If the colour, the stripe count and the label disagree with each other, the sling does not go on the hook. That is the whole point of having three markings instead of one.

Why the marking is a manufacturing test, not decoration

Colour is the cheapest thing on a sling and one of the most revealing. Getting it right means:

  • dyeing to a consistent shade, batch after batch — not “greenish”, the green;

  • printing the correct number of stripes for the capacity of that specific assembly;

  • issuing a label whose colour matches the fibre actually used — and not relabelling a nylon sling for a polyester order;

  • dyeing the actual tonnage, not the biggest number in the catalogue.

A supplier that treats colour as decoration will eventually ship a sling whose colour promises a capacity the webbing does not carry. That is a process failure that no amount of inspection at the port will catch, because it looks perfectly normal.

Which is the point of the whole article: the colour is only worth believing because behind it there is a batch record, a standard number and a tensile test — and a manufacturer willing to name all three.

The one-line version

The colour certifies a WLL band in straight lift under a specific standard. The stripes cross-check it, the label colour names the material, and the label text is the evidence. Read all three, and specify the standard in writing — never buy capacity on colour alone.
